Do you feel like you took off full-steam ahead, on an exciting journey to the Land of Language Acquisition, only to find yourself circling rudderless in the doldrums, in murky water, without a clear map to guide you? Are you drowning in ideas? Adrift in the proficien-sea? Not sure where this voyage is going, and how you will even know when you get there in the pea-soup fog of new ideas? Tired of navigating uncharted waters in your language program? Or perhaps you are down to the bottom of the idea barrel, and months and months away from land? Are you frantically sending out messages in a bottle online, hoping to get a response to get everything ship-shape? Are you warily eyeing the lil’ mateys on your ship, wondering when the restless feeling might turn the corner into full-fledged mutiny? Worried that you will run out of hardtack before you make it to your destination, or even figure out what the destination even is?
Drop anchor with Tina in this one-day workshop that will show you how to find the treasure buried right under your own soggy, sunburnt nose. Come get the wind back in your sails and have the lil’ mateys happily swabbing the poopdeck as their brains dance the hornpipe with glee.
What is this magical elixir? Why, my esteemed Capitan, it is right under your nose! Glinting in the water, right under the mayhem that is your ship, there is an underwater mountain of gold.
Look down. There’s gold in that swirling, murky water that you call a curriculum. It’s reading and writing. It’s literacy.
Learn how, each and every day, you can harness the power of shared writing and shared reading to get your crew in tip-top condition.
Tina will show you:
1. A way to organize your daily objectives and schedule so that you can take ANY ten- to twelve-minute activity, find the gold in it, so that you can settle down and sail smoothly through the rest of the lesson, almost on auto-pilot
Learn a flexible, repeatable seven step daily instructional sequence
1. Class Meeting
Experience two model lessons using this sequence, using strategies selected to build Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills (BICS) and then again with strategies that build Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (CALP)
Practice each step with a partner in an Intensive Skills Lab
2. A way to organize your instructional voyage throughout the unit so that you have a clear destination and a path to get there
Learn some standards-based principles of unit design and formative and summative assessment, and how to use a writing pathway to “angle” your shared writing to give students clear goals they can control, instead of basing your assessments on accuracy or students’ ability to retain specific words.
Experience a cycle of summative portfolio assessment and work with the World Language Proficiency Project’s new Writing Assessment Continuum for Description and Narration
Lean ideas for how to structure and sequence your summative assessments.
Teachers enrolled in the Express Fluency workshop August 6th-9th can add this one-day workshop for only $70.
